Out of curiosity, why are you so adamant about not letting people take stuff from your site, even when it's stuff like generic linking? Sorry - that came out funny; didn't mean it the way it sounds. I'm just curious, since a lot of people don't care. ~ Varda

Why? Mainly because I've had a lot of bad experiences with people taking my information and foisting it off on others as their own. All three prominent members of management here are pretty hard on that type of thing. And as for me, personally, I just don't want to be the one to provide the information to people who are too lazy to do the work themselves - how hard is it to email a site manager and ask if you can link them? And when it comes to compiled info that's taken time, effort, and research to put together, as far as I'm concerned, it's all out there, and if people want it badly enough, then can get the information themselves. And now that I've sufficiently bitten your head off for no reason, did that answer the question? ~ Elwen

Ah, okay - that makes sense. Just curious why - some people don't care, and some people care a lot. I don't disagree; just asking. I'd hate to see people passing off my work as theirs if I had it out, so yeah. No, you didn't bite my head off, and yes, that answered the question! ~ Varda Mod Note - I can't believe I just caught this, but did you sign off on my name for a reason?....[/size]

I hope it's okay to just pop in here, but I just have to say that I really respect that - so many people online just throw their work out an don't care who uses it. They seem to be a bit misled, since that is in fact illegal... It also drives me crazy - why would you put your hard-earned work out for someone else to take? And if you didn't, why did you let people do it? That just bugs me....

Thanks, and yes, that's pretty much the driving philosophy here. If someone has put enough of their time and effort to create something that they can call theirs, why should anyone else be given the rights to that? The truth is that they shouldn't, unless they have some special, explicit permission.
It is illegal, and some people just don't seem to get it; just because it's on the internet and not published in a book somewhere doesn't mean it's not violating copyright and committing plagiarism.

Yeah I'm the same as you Elwen... I mean at my site it took me ages trying to find out all the info for my character bios, and I had to extract it from my limited knowledge of The Silmarillion... It took me 3 reading attempts before i finnaly got my Celebrian & Celeborn bio's completely accurate...so I would get annoyed if someone took my info without asking....
And plagarism is something I refuse to contemplate, so if i catch someone stealing info from me then yes i would get annoyed

I'm sure all of you would agree that advertising of any sort is a nuisance when the site itself is your own, and you are the webmiss/master.
So, to keep away from a tonne of spamming/advertising, we have this no link rule to be on the safe side.

Wait a sec.... Sorry Angel, but I just can't seem to figure out where that came from.... I mean, I get what you're saying, but after re-reading the thread three times, I still don't get what prompted that comment.... or am I just slow? ~ Elwen
