Why do challenges? It seems a fair question, and I would like to address it, if I may, and explain why I believe it is important for everyone to try.
Challenges for fanfic websites like these are not proposed as a contest necessarily, but as a way to practice our writings skills. True, they are usually judged, but only for fun and to congratulate the writer who did an exceptional job. With using characters and settings a writer already knows well, he or she can practice more on either their writing style, tone, or unusual story they are trying to write about. Challenges are used more of a way to try your hand at writing something, either an idea or character study, that you wouldn't normally write about. This can come in handy, and improves your writing style greatly by exploring new ideas and plots that are either uncommon or have never been met before by our pens.
Personally, I think that challenges are best used to shape and mold us into better writers by reaching to the boundaries of our skill and pressing us farther. Besides, you never know when you can use something similar to the story you wrote for another scene in another fanfic or other works.
So please, I encourage you all to enter into all the challenges you can find, either on this website or others like it. It doesn't have to be long, or rewritten over and over, or even take up a lot of your time. Any writing you do, whether small like Challenges or big like novels, is a step in the right direction to make us superb authors.
Thank you.
