Ok, no, I haven't seen it yet, but I will in... *checks calendar* 9 days! Yay!
Has anyone else seen this show? It's supposedly the best of Broadway, but it will be my first time seeing it.

I really, really want to see this; missed it the last time it was in town, which irritated me...
Saw the movie, though, which was, overall, good for a movie reproduction. They're good, too, and the music is excellent. Actors, both onstage and on film, were more than qualified, although I think there's more of a sense of realism in the Broadway version, being actually in a sort of open theater.
Where are you seeing it?

I saw the movie recently and I loved it! It was really good. The songs were great. The opening scene when the Chandelear (spelling?) was lifted up and and all the dust blew away while cool music was playing was an exelent opening. It was also a cool way to go back in time.

Costumes are gorgeous, both onstage and on film, and so is the music. Music with that sort of lyrical power is really, really rare, especially in this age... (I agree, Eldariel, about the opening scene; very nice flow through the movie with the black-and-white inserts.) Ana - do you know if the same cast is playing the Broadway version? Be sure and say how it was, too! ~ Elwen

I'm back! I saw it this afternoon! Woohoo! First, to answer some questions: "Do you know if the same cast is playing the Broadway version?" I do know, and the answer is no. Right now, Phantom of the Opera is not on Broadway, but it is traveling around the country in a Broadway Across America US Tour. The actors in the movie have never set a foot on a stage for PotO, and probably never will. Ok, on stage? It was fantastic! So much better than the movie in some ways. For example, the set and costumes were amazing. There was a boat that moved across stage and candles came as if coming out the water while it passed by. The chandlier was dropped and lifted up and there were so many beautiful backdrops and drapes and other set pieces... it must have cost a fortune! As for the singers and music: I liked Christine in the movie's voice better than the stage. I am not a fan of opera singing, especially for girls, so it explains my dislike. The phantom was amazing and his voice was so beautiful, and so was Raoul's. The music was very good, and the staging was great. Acting: so much better than the movie. Everyone's acting was three notches at least higher than the movie's acting. The phantom was so good I wanted to cry at the end. And Christine's acting was superb. She was very believable and you could tell what she was thinking, unlike Christine in the movie whom no one could tell if she had any thoughts at all. Special Effects: if you go, just going for the special effects is worth it. It's amazing what kind of stuff they can do on Broadway, and I am still scratching my head over some of the special effects that happened. Overall, very good and very enjoyable to watch! There were added scenes and some adjustments, but it was mostly like the movie.

Welcome back! And by cast, I meant the original Broadway cast, as in the cast from the original Opera, not the film cast. The Opera, I hear, stuck to the book more than the film did, so the changes are understandable, and in general, acting onstage is much, much better than acting onscreen, for the simple reason that you're seeing the raw energy that comes without digital alteration. Much nicer, and much more personal. And as a last note, Broadway is famous for absolutely spectacular sets and costumes and the like, and if Christine was Sarah Brightman and you didn't like her voice, I'm going to have to hurt you! ;D ~ Elwen

Woops. Sorry, misunderstood the question. *shakes head at self* Ok, no the cast was not the same as the original Broadway. Usually the original cast only does it for two or three years then moves onto something else. The show has been going on for, at least ten years now? And the original cast always (to my knowledge) stays in New York and never travels with the tour. So, no, none of the people there were the originals. And Christine wasn't Sarah Brightman, so you don't have to exert yourself and try to give me pain.

Eh, that's okay; happens a lot... *shrugs* Yeah, I figured as much, and I think you're right, but I had to ask... So good... I don't have to come and hunt you down. Hehe.

I might be able to see it live sometime soon. Appartently a theatre nearby (well, a couple hours away, but that is beside the point) does a pretty good version of it. My parents are thinking of taking me.
