What kind of music do you like? I'm seeing lots of variation in people here, so where do you find yourself? I hate metal--but, like it seems many do, I adore Evanescence. Her soprano, mixed in with the music, sounds excellent, as does the entire lack of rap or screaming undertones. She screams, in a way, but not as much as many male-based metal bands tend to do. I like the pop genre, but many of the younger contemporary artists give me a headache, because of their entire lack of training. It's all raw talent that is never really cultivated. For example, singers like Anna Nalick, Carrie Underwood, or Jewel, are fairly good, but on the other hand, singers like Britney Spears or Avril Lavigne and co. are rather irritating--why do they have to breathe so unbelievably hard when they sing? Rock, as long as it isn't hard, bang-your-head-into-the-wall-syndrome rock, is good... Example, 3 Doors Down, the Bangles, the Caesars, Courtney Jaye, Counting Crows, Green Day, Michelle Branch, Nickelback... But rock has it's limits. I wouldn't say light rock only, but certainly not hard rock. I despise rap. Enough said. Country's great, but I prefer the country/rock style, as opposed to the twangy, very southern, old-fashioned country that tends to talk about people's jeans and the dog more than anything else... And I love opera music! Opera and Broadway--I will listen to that stuff constantly. Phantom of the Opera, Wicked, and the list goes on. I love that genre... So random! Anyway, that's my random spiel--anyone else? ~ Eilian

Elwen introduced me to Evanescence, and as it seems some consensus here is, I hate metal, but that band is good--Lee's soprano in with the music is a wonderful mix, and not quite as hard on the ears as most metal bands are. Alternative is all right, but it's not a favourite of mine--certain alternative bands are good, like Amber Pacific, Coldplay, Hope of the States, Yellowcard... Even Simple Plan is all right, though I do think that the first CD needs some fine-tuning, as do the vocals overall, but their music amuses me. Rock... I tend to prefer light rock over anything else--Sarah McLachlan or Sheryl Crow and according artists are good, but I'm not much of one for hard rock. I agree with most of the bands that Eilian listed, and even bands like Mae or Matchbox Twenty are within my range. Pop tends to bother me--or rather, contemporary pop--but some of it is okay. Again, I agree with most of Eilian's list, and singers like Celine Dion are okay, though you can only listen to her for so long... Country... Singer's like Faith Hill or Lee Ann Womack are okay--Keith Urban's "Be Here" album is good, too. I share the sentiment that country with the rock influence is better than the old-fashioned style. I'm also a big instrumental fan--Apocalyptica, Riverdance (soundtrack), Celtic, etc. ~ Elbereth

Wow, lots of diversity here! I'm liking that!
Personally, I could listen to light/medium rock for forever. And since everyone seems to have a different definition of rock, by that I mean Seether, Stained, Three Doors Down, Nickelback, etc...
I don't like hip-hop at all, but I can certainly enjoy a moderate serving of pop/punk-- Faves there would be Matchbox Twenty, (Who are getting better and better lately) Simple Plan, Five For Fighting, Sarah Maclachlan, Michelle Branch, Yellowcard, etc. Out of that genre, I absolutely *love* Vertical Horizon, Goo Goo Dolls and Lifehouse: Definitely my top three bands right there.
I don't know where Evanescence fits in, but I love them too.
I can't stand rap, metal, opera, or Lenny Kravitz. Hillary Duff, Brittany Spears, and Avril Lavigne all freak me out as well, (plus Green Day occasionally, though they too have been improving greatly), so I don't listen to them often.
I'm also a huge Country fan-- Love Toby Keith, Kenny Chesney, George Strait, Alan Jackson, and Tim McGraw. Of course, most of the others they play on country stations were kind of aquired tastes--I used to work at a ranch, and as a homeschooler I'd be there in the morning when all my friends were in school, and I'd be cleaning stalls for four hours with no-one else around and no noise other than the country station on the radio.
And I agree--Rock Country is a big improvement on traditional, although some of that is really good too.
So, obviously my tastes are kind of random... Just the other day I found myself enjoying the song "Don't Forget About Us" by Mariah Carey (which I didn't at all before).
I also like "Blow Me Away" by Breaking Benjamin, plus the band Skillet, which are both hard rock, and randomly, Linkin Park, Enya, the Fray, the Afters... The list goes on and on. I guess I'm just a really strange person. :-)
Was that long? That felt really long...

I like celtic music. I find it relaxing sometimes but I also like the more up-beat celtic.
I like many soundtracks of fantisy and sci-fi movies. I tend to like dramatic battle music.
I dislike rap. Rock can be okay. I like old music from around the 60s. (the Beatles)
I also like funny music. (They Might Be Giants)

I like any kind of rock (punk, metal, soft), some pop (these days, not much) and soundtracks. Rap/rock mixes and rap is sometimes good - I like Linkin Park and Eminem. For my other favorites, Green Day, All-American Rejects, American Hi-Fi and that kind of thing is also good.

In general, I'll listen to almost anything. I refuse to listen to rap, the majority of techno and metal, and really hard rock. Again, the only remotely metal/punk rock band I will listen to is Evanescence: I love her voice, and somehow it pairs so nicely with the music she sings to, as odd as one would think it to be otherwise. I tend to have a weakness for female vocalists, primarily because of the way they sound on speakers: the higher-range altos and sopranos sound so clear when played on a good sound system! I also love opera, instrumental, and Celtic music; I've a very strong liking for the traditional Irish/Celtic music and its according singers, and opera is fun to listen to as long as it isn't in English!! Gah--opera in English absolutely destroys the entire concept of it... The contemporary pop singers are all right: there are a few that I will regularly listen to, but not a whole lot, primarily because of the lack of training that can be HEARD. Anyone can stand in a studio and sing. Good or bad, it doesn't really matter. It takes training and talent to stand in a studio and sing well enough to be appreciated. I tend to listen to a lot of inspirational Christian music--Third Day, Tree63, Twila Paris, Joy Williams, Rebecca St. James, etc. Variations in music style, yes. Rock is good, as long as it isn't hard. Singers like 3 Doors Down, Amber Pacific, Plain White Tees, Nickelback, Michelle Branch, Sheryl Crow, Sarah McLachlan, Enya, etc. Long range light-medium. Country, I prefer country-rock to traditional country. Keith Urban, Kenny Chesney, Faith Hill, etc. are all good country singers, though some of the traditional stuff is really, really good. All right; my random spiel. Done now. ~ Elwen
