For those of us who feel that Legolas (and Orlando) played too much of a screen-filler, here's an article that sort of mitigates that feeling. Not by much, but I do agree here that his archery skills were developed... I've tried my hand at archery - enough to know that this is true. Unless, that is, my coach was horrible. ~ Elwen

Nice article, Elwen!! I like it!! I've attempted archery, as well, and to my knowledge, limited though it may be, this seems accurate. I've never disputed the fact that Orlando/Legolas is good at the physical embodiment he brings to the character; it's just verbally that I have questions... But aside from that, bringing up archery was a nice move - archery is one of their primary methods of defense. Between that and swordfighting, it strongly resembles the medieval time period (and I do believe that that was the original intent). Archery from horseback is impossibly hard; archery at a moving target is hard; archery from a close range seems at first to be useless. But somehow, they all manage, which I hold great respect for. Holding a bow runs the same way as riding a horse. It's tough to get it to do what you want it to do. ~ Elbereth

I do archery and I've gotten pretty good at it. It is difficult. I find that when I'm aiming I'm not actully aiming for the center of the target. I've never shot at a moving taret and if I did I would likely miss despite the facti've been doing archery for three years.

Yeah, I don't think you're supposed to; if you want to hit the bulls-eye, with no wind blowing, aim just above that, because laws of gravity say that the arrow will drop slightly as it flies, therefore needing that extra bit of space to hit the intended target. If it's a windy day, more compensation is needed... although, granted, archery on a really windy day is right next to impossible....
Moving targets are tough - really tough. I've seen it happen, but haven't had the chance to try yet...

Wow, Eldariel, you take archery? I'm jealous...
There is no archery anywhere in my state. Not kidding, I've looked. *sigh*
And as for moving targets, pidgeons are always good. *evil grin*

You know, sad as it is, I never quite thought about that until you mentioned that. And somehow, it manages to make a whole lot of sense. Why would you aim directly for the target? Because exactly by that reasoning (Newton's laws of Gravity etc. etc.), it wouldn't work... I do feel like quite the dolt at the moment... *chuckles* Well said, Anaroriel - pigeons are lovely to shoot at (and I apologize to anyone who likes the creatures). I cannot stand them, so I have to agree wholeheartedly. ;D ~ Elbereth

Thank you, thank you. I can't stand the birds at all, and I have a ton of them in my backyard that just won't leave... pesky birds... *wishes for a bow and arrows for Christmas*

*snorts* If I could somehow get rid of them.... That would be so nice... I don't approve of inhumane methods of "pest control", but getting rid of some of the birds without torturing them seems like a lovely concept...

I think we are getting off topic here...
So how long does it take for a person to get really good, on average? I mean, for example, on the piano it takes about eight years or more to get really good at it, and that is about the same for every musical instrument. Since Archery is a sport, how many years does it take before you start going to competitions and the Olympics?

*laughs* Yeah, just sort of... *smacks self* Bad Elwen, setting a bad example!! Um, I wouldn't be able to tell you that... It's a sport, so I'm guessing years of training, give or take on personal talent level - for example, equestrial sports can take anywhere from ten to fifteen or more years to train a rider enough to train a horse to gain professional stamina and skill... I'm guessing archery falls a little short of that mark, but the eight to ten year markers sound right. ~ Elwen

Yes, bad Elwen. Ok, about eight or ten years? Cool. I'll be old when I am finally able to start and get good at it.... JK.
