I just finished this series and loved it. The main character is a 12-year-old girl named Lyra. She gets captured and they try to cut her daemon away (her daemon is a part of her and she might die if they get cut apart). In the end her father rebells and tries to destroy God.

This is the series by Phillip Pullman, yes? (Is this the one with the Subtle Knife etc., or is this the other one?)

I've been wanting to read this for a while; maybe now that I've actually got another recommendation, I'll get around to it... How's his writing? Good, bad, in between...?
